When Amazon's DynamoDB was announced, Don MacAskill mentioned that SmugMug was using DynamoDB. I would like to know what exactly DynamoDB is being used for, and any details that can be given about the implementation.

Stay tuned! Our dynamo integration is being written as we speak (by me). Once complete, there will be a big, technical blog post!

In the meantime, you can learn a lot about dynamo itself from this great blog post:

From the DynamoDB Testimonials page on SmugMug:

"DynamoDB is a truly revolutionary product which allows SmugMug to finally realize its goal of being 100% cloud-based,” said Don MacAskill, CEO of SmugMug. “I love how DynamoDB enables us to provision our desired throughput, and achieve low latency and seamless scale, even with our constantly growing workloads. Even though we have years of experience with large, complex architectures, we are happy to be finally out of the business of managing it ourselves, and to be using DynamoDB to get even higher performance and stability than we can achieve on our own. Most importantly, DynamoDB allows SmugMug to spend even more time and energy on what really matters – our product and customer experience.”

To receive more detail, it also looks like Don MacAskill was interviewed by Werner Vogels on this topic which can be found here.

Thanks for the info, but the last few times Don had full proper tech posts about what was going on (like the MySQL and ZFS stuff he talked about, or how SmugMug use S3). I would like to see something similar for DynamoDB... but that being said, i have not watched that video yet... Will have a look and see whats in it! – TiernanO Feb 9 '12 at 21:03
