As a pro member, what are the particular DNS settings that I need to set up my SmugMug account properly?

You need to make sure to setup both the CName AND the DNS. You can do this in the SmugMug control panel, settings tab.

As outlined in the SmugMug help file:

  1. Point your CNAME 'www' to domains.smugmug.com .

  2. Point your A Record '@' to 208.79.45.23 .

  3. Visit your SmugMug Control Panel and look in the Settings tab for the "Domain" line. Click change and paste your new domain name into the "Custom Hostname" box. That's it!

Tip: Using a subdomain? No need to set up the A Record.

What confused me is that it's asking to do both. My Host, Dreamhost, won't allow me to do both actions. – chrisjlee Jan 26 '12 at 2:42

@ChrisJ.Lee Perfect! That is a great example of why this question should be here then, I would suggest adding that detail to the question. Eg - you found the Smug help, tried it, but you don't have the fields to enter it! Another revision to consider is for a custom subdomain. You can use anything you want as the subdomain but it must point using a CNAME at domains.smugmug.com – Doc Walker♦ Jan 26 '12 at 21:01
note there's a tip on there: "Tip: Using a subdomain? No need to set up the A Record." Basically, the cname is for the domain (foo.abc.com) and the A record is for the root (abc.com). – tedder42 Jan 27 '12 at 2:59
Also note that some (really great) registrars allow a CNAME for the main domain itself, so you could have a CNAME for both 'www' and '@'. – cabbey Jan 27 '12 at 15:33

To clarify for everyone. CNAME points to another address, A Record points to an IP address. They are used for different reasons. Essentially A record points to a host and a CNAME is a forwarder. You cannot have a CNAME and A record with the same name (www) because it would be a conflict.

What level of smugmug is required to utilize the custom domain? I am not a customer yet but am shopping.
