What is the best practices way to use images uploaded to SmugMug on blogs - in a reduced file size appropriate for the blog and taking into account all the varying bandwidth constraints blog visitors may have to deal with?

It really depends on the design of your blog, and your artistic / editorial intentions. More and more people have faster connections, and the display copies from SmugMug that you can embed are very lightweight - of course the bigger you go the more time they'll take to load. If you go to the share button > get a link you'll find three pre-built options for you under the "Embeddable Links" tab, Blog Small, Medium and Large. If you want to go larger, you can adjust the copied text to change -L to -XL, -X2, -X3 (in two places in the link) or you can even create a custom size link of any dimension you choose.

I typically embed -L large images in my blog.

Try as well the Blog link in the same location as Andy said. It will give you a ready photo which will be a link to your photo as well on smugmug. So if someone will click the image on your blog they will be redirected to your smugmug website. – Tomasz Nowicki Feb 22 '12 at 23:57

Something else to consider is the format of your blog and theme. While Andy can use -L images in his Blog, my template is narrower so I use -L. What I found helpful was to measure how wide the image will be and then pick the proper size I wanted. This approach works on fixed width themes and may not work for your blog style.
