SmugMug Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for SmugMug developers and end users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am thinking of creating a page for listing the prices of services (Not photos per say, but more like photo shoot prices). SmugMug doesn't seem to have an obvious way to display a page listing information, all it does is allow for putting Galleries. How can I do this using the SmugMug engine, without customization?

I think this should be reworded or closed. Its awfully general 'tips'. If there's a specific thing on the prices page, it'd be better to address that. – rfusca Jan 26 '12 at 3:26

Generally, a stackexchange are not used for tips or advice. There has to be a definitive answer that can be rewarded. – chrisjlee Jan 26 '12 at 3:57

This is photography related yes, but doesn't seem to be SmugMug related. – Mike Kelly Jan 26 '12 at 4:25

I agree the format of the question is not perfect but it is going to be very common until SmugMug develops a better way to create these types of pages. The problem for me is the "without customization?" caveat. Just to demonstrate the answer (using customizations) most likely to be given without that caveat: You would create a new gallery and item 39 from this help page help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93381 Then add the price information as HTML to the gallery description. Yes, the content of the page is open to discussion but that is the most common method to achieve it. – Doc Walker Jan 26 '12 at 20:49

I agree with Doc, the revised version of the question is quite different from what I think most of the close votes were made against. What he has now is directly answerable. I vote to reopen. – cabbey Jan 27 '12 at 0:40

There are about as many ways that you can do this as ways that you pose a model. Some basic ideas or themes that I have seen professionals use include:

  • Naming the page "Investment"
  • Group the pricing into the main styles (eg. Wedding, Engagement, Seniors, Trash The Dress)
  • As quality or perceived quality increases, I have noticed fewer pricing pages actually include prices.
  • If you do not want to completely exclude prices, you could state "Prices start at $XXXX"
  • Note that you can be contacted for "personal or customized quotes"
  • List that you are available to travel internationally or domestically if you are

To keep it "looking" professional - I would suggest making sure the page design and style matches the rest of your portfolio. I have seen too many poorly integrated sites that have a portfolio that is keyed completely different then the blog, or other pages.

If the theme of your portfolio and or personality is laid back, and fun, keep the price page of a similar theme. An example would be, if you like to use the word "awesome" or "kick butt" elsewhere in your pages, why not the pricing page. On the other hand, you also want a hint of elegance, at least in the wedding industry. You want to treat your customers with a hint of a "personal concierge".

Overall, I think the idea is to fit it in with your current them, keep the colors tame, fonts readable, and as simple as it needs to be to get your audience engaged and contacting you.
