I'm currently using the PHP multi-album uploader (slightly modified) to upload my pictures to SmugMug from my Ubuntu machine.

Ideally, I'd like to keep my files in sync between my local machine(s) and SmugMug.

Is there a tool that does it already (preferably not using PHP, and making use of inotify if possible)?

Sorry, I am not aware of one. Keep an eye here: help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/… Its possible that someone will build one. – Doc Walker♦ Mar 11 at 11:58
