What is a good number of images to put in a gallery before overwhelming ones users?

I do not think there is a real number on this and that SmugMug does a pretty good job presenting this anyway. I think as long as they are logically grouped together it is fine. For my personal wedding I broke it apart inside a category that had Wedding Shower, Rehearsal Dinner, Wedding, and Wedding Reception galleries. It makes it easier to find a picture when I am looking for it. It all depends on the audience though. If you it is a client for wedding you shot, it will be fine to have it in one or two galleries for them to look through (they will take the time). If you are trying to sell individual shots to the casual passer by, or something it probably would be better to have fewer pictures in each gallery and have more galleries. |

Viewers will have different tolerance levels for the number of images in a single gallery; there is a technological limitation of 5000 images (see here.) For my wedding galleries, I choose to have a single gallery with "all images" (approx 300-500), but each photo is keyworded with appropriate tags. I then use approximately a dozen Smart Galleries to display pictures with a particular keyword in those galleries. That way a client can choose to check out specific images (such as "bride and groom" photos) or the 'all images' gallery for the event. Here is an example of a wedding event collection. |
