My text is fuzzy when printed?

Question

while I am familiar with designing in Illustrator and Photoshop, I know nothing about output settings, etc. I am designing in Illustrator a design using only text, but when it is printed in a photo lab, the text is fuzzy. What are the steps I need to take in order to ensure my text is crisp, as I assume it should be? ( I do Save as a jpeg in order to upload to the site, since .AI is not a format that it will take...Is that the problem? Please help! Thanks! (use simple language please!) Allison
