SmugMug Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for SmugMug developers and end users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I recently signed up for a Power account and am facing a problem. I love the mobile version of the site especially for sharing pictures with my parents .. the minimal controls and clicks on the site makes it very easy to navigate and keep swiping to the next photo. Unfortunately, I'm unable to replicate that experience on an iPad. When I click the gallery link on an iPad, it opens the desktop version of the website. While I agree that that feature is awesome, from my parent's perspective, it adds a lot of clutter and buttons on screen and most importantly, they lose the swipe for next picture feature.

Am I missing something or is there a way to replicate the iPhone experience on an iPad without setting up the iPad app on my mum's iPad, which I wouldn't want to do as I don't want to share ALL pics with them just the grandkid's galleries :)

There is a way by using a third party browser app that allows you to set the browser user agent. For example Atomic browser that I use on my iPad, comes with a "identify browser as" feature that also offers iPhone Safari as a choice. When selecting that option, SmugMug serves up the mobile site even on an iPad. There's a lite version of the browser you can try free of charge.

This is the right answer. You can do it, but you have to make SmugMug think that your browser is a mobile browser and not a full fledged desktop browser. I really wish Safari on iOS would just allow you to switch this up because it is annoying for many sites. – dpollitt Jul 20 '12 at 14:35

There is not a way to force the mobile version on an iPad. The full site is served and there is no longer a method to force the mobile version.

If you need anything else, please let us know.

I am hoping that this will be developed as well. While some people can optimize their browsers, etc., the problem is with my SmugMug site itself. I would like clients to experience a mobile-like version of my site for navigation purposes.

The "swipe" to next picture is the most desired feature in my book.

You might also want to consider just putting a shortcut to the specific gallery on the iPad home screens. On your mother's iPad go browse to the gallery of the kids. In Safari click the arrow icon to the left of the address bar and one of the options is "Add to Home Screen". That will bring her right to the gallery you want her to be at.

This is a nice side note, but it does not answer the question the user asked so I voted it down. – dpollitt Jul 20 '12 at 14:36
aye, better as a comment to the main question than an answer to it. – cabbey Nov 9 '12 at 11:07
