SmugMug Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for SmugMug developers and end users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

The images in my collection have keywords in XMP:Subject and image titles in XMP:Title.

SmugMug neatly imports the keywords, but seems to ignore the title. I'd like it to go into the caption. Can I accomplish this without mucking with the metadata in all my existing images?

I noticed a UserVoice request to import both Caption and Title, and that's marked as "completed", but I can't find my titles anywhere in the SmugMug UI.

if the XMP is imported/used in Lightroom, the Lightroom Plugin will use the Title of the image as part of the caption.

SmugMug only supports importing captions from the these fields: Xmp.dc.description Xmp.dc.UserComment Iptc.Application2.Caption Exif.Image.ImageDescription

The above list is in the order we look for the information. The first field that contains any information is used for the caption. Source

If you have your information in other fields, you could only try to copy it over to one of the supported fields.

While I'm not aware of any graphical tool, if you're familiar with scripting / batch files, you should be able to do it with the ExifTool command line tool. Perhaps there's even a graphical user interface (GUI) available for that that would allow you to do that. I wasn't able to find such a GUI, but maybe someone else has more luck?

Is there a reason it doesn't fall back to Xmp.dc.title? As you can see from the spec, (not to mention the name itself!), that's a pretty natural tag to use for the title of an image. I can change everything with ExifTool, but I'd really prefer not to. In addition to having to batch convert all my existing images, the tool I use for setting the metadata while sorting my photos (geeqie) puts the title in Xmp.dc.Title. – mattdm Nov 12 '12 at 15:01
