You are able to setup a coupon for a digital download per the SmugMug Help site:
Currently coupons apply to all prints, merchandise, and downloads for all printable images on your site and are not product specific.

There's not a way for customers to generate the download zip file. But you can instruct them say, in the gallery description area, to email you and you can generate a zip file and email the link to them. More here on SmugMug's Help Pages.

I've had some success by setting the style of the album to Thumbnails. Then family members will click on a thumbnail to see a photo and they can usually find the Save photo at the top of the page.
