In the gallery settings you should be able to autosort by Date Uploaded and set the sorting by decending. I have that on many of my galleries and it works well. I also want my latest photos shown first.

The API for getting the albums also tells when they were last updated (See this page). So, you could get the list of albums, see if any of them have been updated at a different time than you updated them, and if so, get the information from that album. Store all of the data you need, and you can pull it up if you need to.

Yes, you can move images to a different gallery using the smugmug.images.changeSettings API method. To do it, you just specify the AlbumID of the gallery that you want to "move" the image to. smugmug.images.changeSettings

A typical workflow would be: Import from card/camera to Lightroom, edit/adjust images, select images to Publish by adding them to the SmugMug Publish area, then upload by clicking Publish.
