Sure. You can simply password a gallery for the client, and send them an email with the link and the password. You can also create an event gallery and password protect it - then the client can easily choose favorites.

Great suggestion for SmugMug's feedback forum. But for now, you can achieve this by assigning the same password to every gallery in a Category. And QuickSettings will help as well.
