Some reasons why this might not be the best idea
Time required to upload / connection speed issues
If your image is larger then the 100MP or 50MB limit(Yes this does happen!)
You would like to determine your own resampling or compression and not rely on Smugmug to do it
You are using SmugVault and pay per use(GB)
If you are sending from a mobile app or ...

Upfront Disclaimer: I work for SmugMug and I'm the developer of our official LR plugin.
Firstly, I want to say that Jeffrey Friedl's plugin is awesome. His dedication to continued development over the years has been nothing short of amazing.
However, over time, his plugin has grown to be overwhelming especially for new users. So SmugMug's approach to our ...

I have used Jeffrey's plug-in, and I find it more functional and capable in general. It really makes sense to use it if you commit to using publishing capabilities instead of exporting. There's a good overview of the differences and why publishing is a better model here:

The official SmugMug plugin for Lightroom was recently (January 31, 2012) updated to include this feature:
http://news.smugmug.com/2012/01/31/new-sync-your-photos-with-lightrooms-latest-plugin/
Your Lightroom library can now be synced with SmugMug as a Publish Collection. It will match up already uploaded photos with those in your Lightroom catalog; ...

Give this new version of the plugin a try.
A new option has been added to the Publish Manager screen
Please let us know if this works as you expect.

Right now, only through SmugMug's Email Upload option. The photos go to a gallery you control, then you move them to the desired gallery.

You can easily upload from iPhoto using SmugMug's MacDaddy uploader. From iMovie you'll want to export the movie to your computer and then upload it by either dragging it into MacDaddy or using one of SmugMug's in-browser uploaders.

I've had a good experience with sm-photo-tool to batch upload photos to smugmug from Linux. I do not have my system setup to automatically upload new photos, but the Python code in sm-photo-tool is pretty flexible and if you're comfortable coding Python (or cron+bash) you should have all the building blocks you need.
I think smugbatch might also be a good ...

There's a script called smugup.sh. The site that hosts it is down, but I got it from web.archive.org. Naturally, web.archive.org is now failing to pull it, so here's the script as a gist. If nothing else, it might help you create an uploader of your own.
There's also a version called smugup.py. It is newer but hasn't been updated, so you are still on your ...

The problem with this is that there is no standard place where the data is stored. So it would have to be done on a case by case basis. So while possible (especially in this case as Microsoft has documented how they do it here) it is a lot of work to grab it from all the various methods programs use. Maybe eventually there will be a standard and it will make ...

Lightroom has a publishing module that makes it dirt simple to publish your images to folders of your choice on Smugmug, and will maintain the organization, including republish when you edit images. Its slick
Jeffery Freidl offers a few additional features in his version, which I recommend.
If you are on Windows, StarExplorer is the best.

You can upload a slideshow to your SmugMug account - as long as it is a supported VIDEO file format. You need to make sure that you have an account that supports video files as well - only BASIC account levels do not support videos.
I hope this helps!

Photos taken by Camera Awesome are captured at the highest resolution your device is capable of capturing. Camera Awesome does compress the data for uploading performance. Image quality and pixel data is not changed when this takes place.
If you need anything else, please write the Heroes with additional details.

I'm not aware of a way to migrate photos from Webshots to SmugMug, but if you can download your photos from Webshots, you should be able to just upload them to SmugMug with the browser uploader.
SmugMug supports feeds and you should be able to use them to display your SmugMug photos as a desktop background (which I think is what you mean by desktop ...

You want to move images that you have onto the Internet? Your question says downloading, but from the description of your setup and effort I gather it might be the other way around and you actually need to upload your images.
In that case you would need an uploader. It should be possible to use the built-in one on your SmugMug website, or you you might try ...

What you describe sounds indeed like the result of the automatic rotation being applied. If your camera comes with a orientation sensor, it'll still save portrait photos in the same landscape orientation and just attach the EXIF orientation tag to include what orientation the photo was taken in. Upon uploading, SmugMug automatically rotates photos lossless ...

Your PHP syntax looks fine! Although it can be condensed a lot.
I'm assuming you are referring to smugmug.images.uploadFromURL (images_uploadFromURL in phpSmug)
You will have to log into SmugMug (through phpSmug) to:
Upload images
Create/rename/move/delete stuff
Add comments
And much more...
Which of the requests that can be used anonymously is not ...

Have you considered using the E-Mail settings in your account. You can setup an e-mail address that will receive photos you sent and then place them into the EMail Gallery. from there you can then move and manage as you want.
The basic process is to go to the control panel and enable it, including setting a password. Then send the e-mail to the address ...

There are two ways to upload to a gallery from within your browser.
You can use the upload button on your homepage, hover over the category / subcategory the gallery is in to locate it and then click on the gallery name to bring up the uploader.
You could also go about it by navigating and opening the gallery to see the photos in it. Then within the ...

I have been using Lightroom since 1.0 and it has had been taking the captions and keywords up with the image. I also have used Star*Explorer and it was successful at uploading with the keywords. I have not used WLPG so I am not sure about the compatibility but with LR I have not had any issues, both using internal uploader and separate.

In addition to the reasons given by dpolitt, there's also the security aspect. You could accidentally set the maximum viewing size for a gallery to Original one day, and your customers will be able to grab your full-sized originals until you notice and correct it. If you're not using a Quick Settings template to set the maximum viewing size of new galleries, ...
